How to count the days between two dates

Pick a start date and an end date in the form above and the answer appears straight away. By default the calculator gives you the number of full days that have passed from the start to the end — exactly what you get if you subtract one date from the other on a calendar. Start and end on the same day? That is zero days apart, because no full day has gone by yet.

The order you type the dates in does not matter. If the end date happens to be earlier than the start date, the tool simply reports the gap between them rather than a negative number, so you never have to worry about which box gets which date.

Counting “between” vs. counting both ends

This is the single thing people most often disagree about, and both answers are correct depending on what you are measuring. Leaving the checkbox unticked counts the days between the two dates (the elapsed days). Ticking “Include the end day in the count” adds one, so you are counting every calendar day from the first to the last inclusive.

A handy rule of thumb: use the plain (exclusive) count for things like “how many nights is this hotel stay” or “how long until the deadline,” and use the inclusive count for things like “how many days am I on holiday” or “how many days does this event run,” where the first and last day both count.

Reading the days, weeks, months, and years breakdown

The big number is the total day count, but the result card also slices the same gap up four other ways at once: a calendar breakdown in years, months and days; the equivalent in whole weeks plus leftover days; the whole thing expressed only in months; and the whole thing expressed only in weeks. Pick whichever unit suits the question you are actually asking.

Why “1 month” isn’t always the same number of days

Months are awkward because they are not all the same length — anywhere from 28 to 31 days. So “1 month and 2 days” can be a different number of total days depending on which month you started in. To keep the calendar breakdown intuitive, the tool walks forward one whole calendar month at a time from the start date, then counts whatever days are left over. When a month is too short for the start day (say you started on the 31st and the next month only has 30 days), it lands on the last day of that month before counting the remainder.

Leap years are already handled

February has 29 days in a leap year and 28 otherwise, and that one extra day changes day counts that straddle late February. The rule is fixed and unambiguous: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for years divisible by 100, unless they are also divisible by 400. So 2000 and 2024 are leap years, but 1900 and 2100 are not. Because the calculator works directly from the calendar, any February 29 inside your date range is counted automatically — you do not have to adjust anything.

Time zones and daylight saving won’t trip it up

Plenty of date calculators quietly go wrong by an entire day because they mix in the clock and your local time zone. This one does all its arithmetic on plain calendar dates in UTC, with no times attached, so daylight saving changes and time-zone offsets can never nudge the result by a day. A date is treated as a date, full stop.
