A business day — also called a working day — is any day from Monday through Friday. This calculator treats Saturdays and Sundays as non-working and leaves them out of every count. It is the everyday definition most offices, couriers, and banks use when they quote a turnaround like “ships in 3 business days.”
Counting working days between two dates
The first tool counts the working days from a start date to an end date, and it includes both the start and the end date in the total. That matches the familiar NETWORKDAYS function in spreadsheets, so a plain Monday-to-Friday in the same week comes out as five business days. The order of the two dates does not matter — you get the same count either way.
Adding or subtracting business days
The second tool moves a date forward by a number of working days, stepping over weekends as it goes. Add 1 business day to a Friday and you land on the following Monday, not Saturday. Enter a negative number to count backward instead — perfect for questions like “what date is 5 business days before this deadline?” when you need to leave enough working time.
Holidays are not subtracted — read this
Being upfront about a real limitation: this calculator only removes weekends. It does not subtract public holidays, because holidays differ from country to country (and often from state to state or year to year), and there is no single list that fits everyone. If your date range spans a holiday your workplace observes, subtract those days yourself, or nudge the result accordingly. Holiday support may be added in a future update.
Different countries, different weekends
The Monday-to-Friday working week is the most common one, but it is not universal. Some regions treat different days as the weekend, so if your local working week is not Monday through Friday, the counts here will not match your calendar. The tool assumes the standard Western working week throughout.

- What happens when I add a business day to a Friday?
- You land on the following Monday. Adding business days steps forward one weekday at a time and skips Saturdays and Sundays entirely.
- How do I count business days backward from a deadline?
- In the “Add business days” tool, enter a negative number. For example, -5 finds the date five working days before your starting date.
- Does this work for countries where the weekend isn’t Saturday and Sunday?
- No. The calculator assumes the standard Monday-to-Friday working week and always treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, so it will not match regions that use a different weekend.
